The practice

By introduction and enquiry

01

Practice

  1. i

    Private Sales

Sourcing and placing works away from the auction floor. Access to material that never reaches a catalogue, valuation held to a discipline, and negotiation conducted entirely off the public record.

  2. ii

    Collection Strategy

An acquisition brief with a point of view. Provenance, condition and title diligence before money moves. Periodic review of a holding — what to keep, what to deepen, and what has quietly finished its work for you.

  3. iii

    Stewardship

Cataloguing, valuation and insurance support, storage and transit, and the unglamorous groundwork of succession — carried out alongside your family office, counsel and executors rather than around them.

  4. iv

    Market Counsel

Board and executive-level advisory to institutions, foundations and art-technology companies working through a market in structural change: private liquidity, lending against art, fractional ownership, and the provenance infrastructure now being rebuilt.

A great transaction leaves no trace. No press release, no lot number, no record of what was paid — only a work that has moved from one careful custodian to the next.

02

Approach

Independent

Fees come from one place: the client. There is no inventory to move and no consignment to fill, so advice costs nothing to give honestly.

Discreet

Discretion is not a courtesy extended at the end. It is the structure of the engagement from the first conversation onward.

Unhurried

The wrong work at the right price is still the wrong work. Much of this job is knowing when not to act.

03

Principal

Catherine Freeman

Catherine Freeman advises private collectors, families and institutions on the secondary art market.

She co-founded FP13, an art consultancy focused on private deals in the secondary market, and has spoken publicly on the structure of that market — who controls it, how works change hands without ever reaching a public record, and what the financialisation of art means for the people who actually live with it.

Catherine Freeman Art Advisory is her independent practice.
